Solar visible radiation can penetrate 2–30 cm (e-folding depth) into snowpacks and photolyse nitrate anions and hydrogen peroxide contained in the snow. Photolysis rate coefficients, J, for NO3− and H2O2 photolysis are presented for a melting and a fresh snowpack at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Calculations of (a) transfer velocities, υ, and molecular fluxes of gaseous NO2 from the snowpack and (b) depth-integrated production rates of OH radicals within the snowpack are presented. The results show the importance of considering the depth dependence, i.e. not just the snow surface, when modelling snowpack photochemistry. Neglecting photochemistry under the snow surface can result in an apparent larger molecular flux of NO2 from NO3− photolysis than the melting snowpack. However, when the depth-resolved molecular fluxes of NO2 within the snowpack are calculated, a larger NO2 flux may be apparent in the melting snowpack than the fresh snowpack. For solar zenith angles of 60°, 70° and 80° the modelled molecular fluxes of NO2 from fresh snowpack are 11.6, 5.6 and 1.7 nmol m−2 h−1, respectively, and those for melting snowpack are 19.7, 9.1 and 2.9 nmol m−2 h−1, respectively.

Background
Immediate-release (IR) quetiapine has been used to treat schizophrenia since 1997, although all the principal placebo-controlled trials have >50% missing outcome data. New studies with relatively lower rates of participant withdrawal have since been published.
AimsTo assess the efficacy and adverse effects of quetiapine IR for schizophrenia, with consideration of outcome quality and clinical meaningfulness of results, and to examine the potential impact of missing data on the main efficacy findings.
MethodWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials comparing quetiapine IR and placebo (or subtherapeutic dose in relapse prevention trials) for the treatment of schizophrenia (PROSPERO registration CRD4201100165). Primary outcomes were change in overall symptoms and response rates. We also examined whether high rates of participant withdrawal (⩾50%) attenuated effect sizes, and assessed the impact of making different assumptions about these people's outcomes.
ResultsWe identified 15 relevant trials (including 2 unpublished), providing the first 12-week data for this drug and the first data on self-reported quality of life. We found quetiapine IR to have a weighted mean difference (WMD) of 6.5 points (95% CI −8.9 to −4) on Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total scores, which corresponds to a standardised mean difference (SMD) of −0.33 (95% CI −0.46 to −0.21). Longer trials reported larger mean differences favouring quetiapine IR, but the overall estimate was smaller if more conservative assumptions about the outcomes of people who left the trial early were made. Approximately 21 people needed to take quetiapine IR for 1 person to experience at least a 50% improvement in PANSS score. No difference in quality of life was observed (two RCTs), although small to moderate improvements in social functioning were found (three RCTs). Quetiapine IR caused sedation and increased rates of clinically significant weight gain, but no extrapyramidal effects were observed.
ConclusionsQuetiapine IR has a small beneficial effect on overall psychotic symptoms over 2–12 weeks, but also leads to weight gain and sedation.

Every society is exposed periodically to catastrophes and public health emergencies that are broad in scale. Too often, these experiences reveal major deficits in the quality of emergency response. A critical barrier to achieving preparedness for high-quality, system-based emergency response is the absence of a universal framework and common language to guide the pursuit of that goal. We describe a simple but comprehensive framework to encourage a focused conversation to improve preparedness for the benefit of individuals, families, organizations, communities, and society as a whole. We propose that constructs associated with the well-known expression “ready, willing, and able” represent necessary and sufficient elements for a standardized approach to ensure high-quality emergency response across the disparate entities that make up the public health emergency preparedness system. The “ready, willing, and able” constructs are described and specific applications are offered to illustrate the broad applicability and heuristic value of the model. Finally, prospective steps are outlined for initiating and advancing a dialogue that may directly lead to or inform already existing efforts to develop quality standards, measures, guidance, and (potentially) a national accreditation program.

Present and past gas-fuelling of galaxies is expected to depend upon both the properties of the galaxies themselves, as well as their larger-scale environments. In the case of galaxies in groups the environment, i.e the group mass, can be probed by measuring the velocity dispersion of the group members, as done with the GAMA Galaxy Group catalogue (Robotham et al. 2011), probing the halo mass function all the way to small groups. The gas-fuelling rate of normal late-type galaxies can be traced by the SFR under the assumption of a steady state between gas-fuelling and gas-consumption by SF. We present a method to estimate disk opacities from UV/optical photometric characteristics, calibrated using the radiative transfer model of Popescu et al. (2011), applied to UV-Opt-FIR GAMA/H-ATLAS photometry for a subset of GAMA galaxies. We use the method to extract attenuation corrected SFRs for a large sample of late-type GAMA galaxies, which we use in an initial application to constrain the dependency of star formation/gas-fuelling in late-type galaxies on mass of parent DMH, and compactness of galaxy group.

We describe a norovirus outbreak in an acute adult psychiatric area in a tertiary care hospital. Containment of the outbreak was challenging because of the patients' psychiatric conditions and the area's configuration. On the basis of this experience, recommendations were made to help prevent a similar scenario in the future.

Time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity data were measured for the itinerant antiferromagnet UNiGa5 (TN ≈ 85 K) from room temperature down to 10 K. The relaxation time τ increases sharply near TN, which we attribute to the opening of a spin gap. In addition, at the lowest temperatures τ increases with a T1 dependence, which is similar to that shown by the heavy fermion YbAgCu4, but with no blocking of electron-phonon scattering within the DOS peak. The transient amplitude increase at TN with a temperature dependence that is consistent with the appearance of a spin gap.

The behaviour of a simulant Magnox waste glass was investigated under the likely conditions of high temperature, very deep, geological disposal, viz. 760°C and 0.15GPa. Under these conditions partial crystallisation of the glass is observed with the formation of LnBSiO5 (Ln = Y, La, Pr, Ce, Nd, Sm and Gd), LiNaZrSi6O15 and a palladium (ruthenium) telluride phase. The significance of these findings is discussed in the context of the high temperature, very deep, geological disposal scheme.

Microdamage in bone contributes to the loss of bone quality in osteoporosis and is thought to play a major role in both fragility and stress fractures (Schaffler et al. 1995). In this study, in vivo microcracks in human ribs were bulk-stained in basic fuchsin and viewed in longitudinal section and in 3 dimensions using 2 different computer-based methods of reconstruction: (1) serial sectioning of methylmethacrylate embedded sections using a sledge macrotome and identification of microcracks using UV epifluorescence followed by computerised reconstruction of microcracks using software and (2) laser scanning confocal microscopy of thick sections followed by reconstruction of microcracks into a 3-D image. The size and shape of microcracks were found to be similar using both techniques. Both techniques of reconstruction showed microcracks to be approximately elliptical in shape. From the serial sectioning reconstructions (n = 9), microcracks were found to have a mean length of 404±145 μm (mean±S.D.) (in the longitudinal direction) and mean width of 97±38 μm (in the transverse direction). Using epifluorescence microscopy, 92 microcracks were identified; mean microcrack length was 349±100 μm in the longitudinal direction. This was consistent with other results (Burr & Martin, 1993) and with the theoretical prediction of an elliptical crack shape with aspect ratio (longitudinal[ratio ]transverse) of 5[ratio ]1 deduced from analysis of random 2-D sections (Taylor & Lee, 1998). The results obtained provide new data on the nature of microcracks in bone and the method has the potential to become a useful tool in the calculation of stress intensity values which indicate the probability of an individual microcrack propagating to cause a stress or fragility fracture.

Initial Public Offers (IPOs) made on the Stock Exchange of Singapore routinely provide sufficiently detailed data to allow reconstruction of both the application and allocation schedules. We show that large investors tend to preferentially request participation in IPOs with higher initial returns, consistent with these investors being better informed. We also show that inferences based exclusively on application strategies are quite different from those drawn on investor allocations. Our results suggest that caution is necessary in assessing the relative merit of competing explanations for IPO underpricing where the underlying demand is not identified.

Due to its low resistivity and excellent thermal stability, IrO2 has attracted attention as an alternative for electrode material in ferroelectric integrated circuit applications. In this work, IrO2 films deposited using reactive DC magnetron sputtering were studied. Film properties such as resistivity, crystallinity and morphology were examined as a function of deposition condition. Optimum process parameters to obtain high quality IrO2 thin films are suggested.

After rapid cooling from 210°C a characteristic electron spin resonance (ESR) and a characteristic below-gap optical absorption have been observed to grow with time at room temperature in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). Both the increased ESR and the increased optical absorption anneal at temperatures above about 100°C. These unexpected results may have important consequences for our understanding of the electronic properties of a-Si:H.
